Loving Our Adventures

We retired from a very active working life, but nothing has compared with the lifestyle we have lead in our retirement years. We celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary in June of 2009. We do pray that God will add years to our lives and ask Him to add life to our years.

So, hold on as you share in our recent adventures.

Fall days can vary from one extreme to another. Some days can be unseasonably warm; others can turn extremely chilly. We just dress accordingly and enjoy all the activities that come with the season.

Dick attended the Naval Academy and was in the graduating class of 1962.
There is an extremely close bond between the class members.

Back to Nags Head with Dave and a full moon. We enjoy the beach and especially the historical events that took place on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

The first English settlement was established in 1585 and the first wireless telegraph transmission took place on Hatteras Island in 1901. The Wright Brothers made their first successful flight in 1903. America’s oldest outdoor drama, “The Lost Colony,” located on Roanoke Island, is a must-see in the summer months and where Andy Griffith started his acting career. The tallest sand dune on the East Coast, Jockey’s Ridge, is also located on the Outer Banks and so much more.

We had a great day trip traveling to Hatteras Island, a neighboring barrier island. The Pamlico Sound is on the west side of the island, and the Atlantic Ocean on the east coast. You can stand on a sand dune and see how narrow the strip of land is that separates the Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean.

The seven villages that make up Hatteras Island are: Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras. Every village is unique and picturesque. If you continue further south, by way of the ferry, you will come to the Island of Ocracoke, a favorite haunt of Edward Teach, “Blackbeard,” the infamous pirate.

We passed the house where the movie, “Nights in Rodanthe,”
was filmed in 2008. The house seems to have some beach erosion problems.

Kite surfing is a very popular sport on the sound side of Hatteras Island as well as biking.

A place to visit on Hatteras Island is the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum that houses artifacts collected from the thousands of entombed vessels that sank in the waters off North Carolina’s Outer Banks, which has the highest densities of shipwrecks in the world.

By now, you know we really enjoy seafood, and try to purchase fresh seafood whenever possible.

There are sleepy canals all over the island.

Lunch was delicious at the Fish House Restaurant, located in Buxton, N.C.

There are four lighthouses located on the Outer Banks, Currituck Beach Light Station, Bodie Island Light Station, Cape Hatteras Light Station, and the Ocracoke Lighthouse on Ocracoke Island, all with distinct markings.

The sailors could distinguish between them from the ocean and know their location in relation to land. We visited the Cape Hatteras Light Station. Ten years ago, the 4,800-ton Cape Hatteras Light Station was moved a half-mile from the sea.

The beaches are open for the locals to drive on during the fall and winter months. The dogs get a ride to the beach for their daily stick chase in the ocean.

The best fishing on the Outer Banks is during September, October and November.

With 900 square miles of water and 80 miles of coastline on the Outer Banks there is always a wave to surf.

Time for more football. We go to a lot of the Washington Redskins’ football games, but because the team is not doing very well this season, we enjoy the tailgating more than watching the game.

Enjoying the beauty of God’s creation offers time to reflect on His goodness and the life adventure we all have.

“Once I surrender my own rights and transfer the ownership of my life to God, I start an incredible journey of adventure. God’s journey for me has been so carefully crafted: it is unique to me and me alone. As I yield all of my time, talent and treasure to Him, He then begins to make the journey path clear. I am given many opportunities to live a life beyond myself, to give more than I could ever dream of -- and in doing so God brings increase to my life.” Unleash His Spirit by Eric Watt.
