Let's Take A Bike Ride

I'm pleased to have my oldest son, Garrett home from college this summer. I've asked him to share his perpective on one of our favorite summertime family activities.

 Bikes Are For All Ages

by Garrett Harper

As our family has grown, it has become a challenge to find activities that everyone can enjoy and that we all have time for. Bike riding around our neighborhood is one of those activities where everyone has something to do and has a good time. Since there are so many of us, we share our vehicles with each other. Some of us will ride bikes, some will skateboard, some roller blade, some ride the scooters, and some walk.

No matter what we are doing, we just have a good time being with each other. We like to race each other; we even like to sing songs while we ride around. It is a great way to get off the couch and get active, but its also an awesome family bonding experience. There have been many fun memories created on our family neighborhood rides.

We also enjoy taking our bikes down to the beach. It tends to be a tradition on Father's Day, however, we enjoy doing it on other days as well. We load up our bikes and head down to the boardwalk. What is different about riding the bikes on the beach, as opposed to in our neighborhood, is that we get the opportunity to rent a two-seater or four-seater bike. That is a very interesting experience.

Usually, my parents and the younger kids ride in the family bike and the big kids ride their own bikes. It is a whole lot of fun! We enjoy the ocean breezes and the sounds of local musicians. I love riding bikes with my family.

Whatever you choose to do this summer, board games, family movie nights, or bike rides, make it something everyone can enjoy and you are sure to build memories.
