Date Night

My Friend Debbie     Recently, my five year old and I had a date night-our first. I had promised him a special night together for some time. So, I asked what he would like for dinner. His requested dinner of choice included a hamburger, fries, and a chocolate shake.
In preparation for our night out, I asked my son what he would wear. He came back with a pair of jeans that were two inches too short and a faded shirt that might have fit his two-year-old brother, but was way too small for him. So, I had to intervene. After I showed him what I would wear for our special occasion he said, "Okay, Mommy, I want to dress fancy, too", and off he went to his closet again. This time he came back with a nice pair of pants, sweater, and his Sunday shoes. For the finishing touch, we slicked his cowlick down and waited patiently for my husband to get off work.

When my husband arrived to take care of our two-year-old, we scrambled to the car. As we drove to the restaurant, my son could hardly contain his excitement. I would like to think it was because he was with me, but I'm sure it was in anticipation of his chocolate shake and hamburger. When we got out of the car he skipped and jumped all the way into the mall.

As the hostess seated us in a booth, Parker said, "Let's sit together on the same side," so we did. As we waited for our food, Parker told me stories, colored pictures, and talked about everything from action heroes to bugs. Finally, his shake arrived and he was so delighted. As I watched him drink his chocolate shake, I couldn't help but look into those sweet, beautiful brown eyes and think how blessed I am to be his mother. Growing up, I can remember daydreaming about the man of my dreams. . .I just never knew he would be 4 feet tall and wear a chocolate milk mustache.

As we finished our date and headed back to the parking lot, my son yawned and said, "Mom, I'll never forget this."
