When God Speaks - What Will You Do?

One evening after having my hair cut, I decided to stop by the local sandwich shop for a quick bite to eat before running some errands. My husband had the kids so I had a few hours to myself. I placed my order and sat down to eat. As I was about to take my first bite, I overheard a conversation between two of the workers at the sandwich place. One was complaining that money was tight and that she only had a quarter tank of gas until payday, which was the next day. As I got ready to take another bite of my sandwich, I felt God impress upon me to give this woman some money - $30.00 to be exact. I immediately thought of how foolish I would look to give money to a complete stranger and dismissed the thought. After I finished my sandwich, I left the store and proceeded to complete my errands. But as I was driving around town, I could not shake the idea that God was telling me to give this lady some money. Again, I said, “God this isn’t me. Please send someone else; I’m just too self conscious.”

Finally, after I finished my last errand I got back into my car. The impression of this woman was still very strong in my mind. So, before I headed home I reached down and grabbed my pocketbook from the floorboard of the car. As I pulled out my wallet I could still hear myself arguing with God. “I don’t have $30.00 in my wallet. I rarely carry cash.” I began to count the money that was in my wallet - “God, I knew I didn’t have $30.00.  There is only $17.00.” I almost felt relieved. Then I felt like God said to check the back pocket of my pocketbook. So, I did. As I looked in the pocket I was surprised there were a few dollars. Again, I counted up all the money so certain that it would not be $30.00. And, indeed it wasn’t. It was $31.00. I turned the car around and headed back to the restaurant.

On the way there I prayed, “God, I will do this because you asked me. But, I need you to give me the boldness to do what you have requested.” So, off I went into the restaurant with a crumpled envelope that held $31.00. The unsuspecting woman was taking a customer’s order when I came in so I proceeded to the restroom. As I walked back by the counter, I made eye contact with her and motioned for her to come to the counter. As I gave her the envelope, I’m not sure exactly what I said, but I ended it with “God bless you.” When I left the restaurant, instantly, I felt relieved that I had obeyed God. I remember even looking down at my hands, expecting them to be shaking, but oddly enough I was very calm. As I reflected on the unusual events that took place I was humbled. God can use each of us to accomplish so much for His glory if we will just obey even when it means stepping outside of our comfort zone.
