Let Them Dream

Sometimes our kids come to us with some outrageous ideas.  While you never want to be discouraging to your children, you also want to balance  the enthusiasm with reality.

Do you ever find yourself listening to your child describe a dream or goal that requires all your parental encouragement and effort to support?  The Lord has taught me to “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” in a whole new way, just like it says in Proverbs 3:5. (NIV)

That’s where I found myself when my son came to me on New Year’s Day indicating he wanted to put on a pro-life benefit concert with proceeds to be donated to the local Crisis Pregnancy Center.  Ok, that sounds like an idea, albeit a grand idea.  But when he went on to describe a concert featuring all different types of music, from “hard-core” and “screamo” to hip hop and folk, I doubted whether he could pull it off.

The question that first came to mind is how to harness a bunch of teen performers to both commit to doing the show, and then get them to follow through . . . for free.  What about all the logistics involved in putting together this entire event?  And, of course, how to convince people to donate for a worthy cause in such difficult economic times?  Would the final donations even cover the costs?  Of course, these are the questions of a mom/businesswoman/lawyer.  But the question I really should have been asking was where was my faith?

The Lord brought it all together in a way that was beyond amazing.  It was great to see all the various bands, musicians, and singers giving their best for a cause they believe in.  It was also very encouraging to witness the respectful young people graciously listening to music that was outside their normal tastes.  God was at work that night in a mighty way.
What happened after the concert was awe-inspiring:  a room full of young people worshipping the God of Heaven and interceding on behalf of the unborn.  The youth prayed, sang, lifted their hands in praise, and freely danced in worship.  It was beautiful.

The Lord taught me that I need to let them dream.  God is the dream-giver.  If He inspires our children to do something, far be it from us to get in the way of the Lord fulfilling HIS purpose in the lives of our children.  I encourage you to let them Dream Big.  Then sit back and watch what the Lord does.  You will truly be blessed.
